Things with Feathers

I was drinking tea with Hank’s family in their southeast Alaskan cabin, when a bird flew against the window. We heard the thud and looked up in time to see a bird falling and an oily impression of spread wings on the glass. Linnea, who was barely two years old, must have seen it too. She sat on the floor and struggled to pull on rubber boots.

“Out,” she said. Her mother held open the door, and I followed them down the steps. It was a dark day, as I remember, and the trees were tall and shrouded with lichen. Linnea splashed into the puddle where the bird had fallen. Squatting down, she grabbed the bird in one hand. It must have been a sparrow, small enough that her small fingers closed around its breast. It must have been barely alive. Linnea held the bird and wouldn’t let go.

“Poor bird,” her mother said. “Do you think it wants a warm nest? Let’s find it a place to rest.” Taking Linnea’s other hand, her mother led her over the moss in the forest, pointing out likely places where a bird might want to sleep.
